Muhammad Umair Qamar, MD, FACP has over twenty years of experience as a physician, leader, administrator, educator, and advocate for comprehensive patient care. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Shortly after completing residency at SUNY downtown New York, he worked at DeBakey Methodist Cardiovascular Coronary Care Unit for three years. Managing the complex, critical patients furthered his interest in cardiovascular care, leading him to successfully complete a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure/Heart Transplant. He also completed a two-year fellowship program with a year dedicated to research in resistant hypertension in different ethnic groups at Mt. Sinai and Veteran’s Affairs. This experience also led Dr. Qamar to become skilled in managing chronically ill patients with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries and amputees who do not respond to standard medical therapy.
He then joined a reputable hospital management company and soon was appointed as Medical Director of a hospitalist group where he was tasked with organizing, managing, and growing a group of physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical students. He was responsible for staffing, resource allocation, and ensuring the department operated efficiently according to quality standards. During his leadership, the medical provider group grew from six team members to eleven and saw quality metrics exceed expectations and standards. Dr. Qamar also provided care to patients at a local federal mental health facility to provide quality medical care. Dr. Qamar is well-versed with the Medicare Guidelines for quality and evidence-based medicine, appropriate use criteria as laid out by the American Medical Association, the American Association of Hospital Medicine, and the American College of Cardiology. He is affiliated with the American College of Physicians, American Heart Association, and American Board of Obesity Medicine.
With this background and experience, he challenged himself to join a larger group of physicians. In this capacity, he has revamped the program completely by creating a new mission statement, values, and vision for the department, and communicating and implementing this with the staff. He has opened direct communication and formed relationships with the hospital administration including Hospital CEO and CFO. He is an active member of multiple committees including the Medical Executive Committee, Trauma Surveillance Committee, Critical Care Committee, and the Emergency Department Committee. This has brought his group to the forefront of communication with other physicians, specialists/consultants, nursing staff, and administrative staff, allowing them to successfully integrate with high volume departments of cardiovascular surgery, critical care, and emergency medicine. He also has a passion for teaching medical students, residents, fellows and nurse practitioners that rotate through the hospital. He has served as a clinical mentor and clinical assistant professor for several years.
In the clinic setting, Dr. Qamar is also interested in utilizing diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasonography, in-office procedures, and cardiac imaging. He also has a special emphasis on metabolic disorders, nutrition, heart failure, and obesity management.
